Career Questions and Answers

Loca
How would you work out this situation with a work contract?
Asked by Loca
My husband was offered a better paying job. The guy told him that he would co-sign our apartment (since we just moved last month and are going to be breaking our current lease), pay for our moving van and gas...But we are having a hard time coming up with a pay amout. My husband has been a tile mechanic for 5 years. A person in this field can make up to 25.00 an hour. The man said that he would never work pass 7 and if he worked on the weekends he would get bouns money. But what do you think is a far amount? I was thiking 850.00-900.00. What do you think? I'm pulling out my hair here! The guy wants my husband to work for him pretty bad, he calls all day. Currently my husband makes anywhere from 500-900 a week, depending on how many jobs he had. Would a hourly wage be fair or should be charge by square ft? I'm confused about all this.....lemme know what you think. Serious answers only please! p.s. I plan on putting everything in writing.

Somehow this sounds a little shakey -- as above, absolutely have his prospective employer make him a written job offer with some sort of guarantee that the conditions set out will remain in effect for at least 1 year (or more depending on what you feel is reasonable) -- next, keep it simple! -- take an hourly wage, period -- if he works weekends its overtime rates per your state/provincial laws -- no vague promises of a bonus, those have a strong tendency to be manipulated and indefinitely defered "just until..." I'd stay away from any co-signing anything as well and just agree (in writing again) on a set "signing bonus" to be paid immediately upon signing his employment agreement to cover any of your moving and lease costs -- don't co-sign anything with anyone you don't have 100% confidence in.

I dont know if the rate is good or not, I never heard of a tile mechanic. BUT if the employer really wants your husband, tell the employer to put the offer in writing. You cant move and expect the person to do what they said they would do.
