I think a better command of the English language would be a good place to start. Read books, even if they're only books about roofing.

First of all, what is your operating state? Laws effecting contracting vary greatly from state to state. That should be your first question. NO sense going into business if you can't generate a profit. For example in NY the cost of Liability Insurance starts at $25,000/$50,000.

while your working for him undercut his pricing, if the site manager knows your work is of a high quality then approach him on the quiet and offer him a better price for any jobs he has coming up. site managers have a budget, they like to save money. underhand and sneaky yes! but a possible starting point. the site i'm on im going round to all the trades bosses asking if they need a labourer. 2 reasons i'm being paid crap wages and the site is a nightmare to work on. in the building game there is no loyalty. i got paid of for a week just so the firm could shave money of the project.
