How can I get a park ranger job?
Asked by packerfanz7658
My whole life I've wanted to be a park ranger. I'm a college junior majoring in forestry. I've applied for over 20 summer jobs with the National Park Service and haven't had a single job offer. What am I doing wrong?

Go meet with a park ranger and see if there is something you could learn from the hands on vs. the classroom work, maybe you could volunteer for the summer and that will help you get your foot in the door ..
Good Luck!

Go to their offices directly and "Ask For A Job!" or Internship. Ask to speak to a Hiring Authority. Or get there name and write them a letter directly and send it Certified Mail. Go to the next level who supervises the National Park Service? Ask someone who already work there how they got the job and what steps did they take? These jobs are limited as these folks generally stay on the job for years but GOOD LUCK! :-)

Go to USAjobs. Once you graduate you will be qualified for alot of ranger jobs all over the country. Did you apply for your summer jobs at USAjobs? They are very particular about the application process, hey, it's the government.

Don't beat yourself up -- the competition for jobs with the National Park Service can be really fierce.
How much effort are you putting into your KSAs? Don't under estimate the importance of well written KSAs. If you go to makingthedifference.org, you'll find some really good info about writing KSAs on their federal job application page. Write KSAs that reflect your communication skills, computer skills and work experiences that demonstrate your ability to take initiative, use sound judgment and work independently.
Do you have any relevant work experience? If not, have you considered doing some volunteer work or an internship through the Student Conservation Association?
A really good website for park ranger jobs info can be found at www.rangercareers.com
