I am not a lawyer, but personally I do not think this would be an invasion on your privacy. If security cameras can be installed anywhere, there is no reason why installing a tape recorder would be against the law. Security cameras can be equipped with a recording device. What you should try to find out is whether this business of installing tape recorders has the consent of management. Ask a lawyer he would be in a better position to help you. Peace and blessings!

if the manager stays there for lifetime of course he should have the right so he knows your doing the right thing.
