Caree advice in construction?
Asked by Paul
I'm an electrican, 2 years residental, 2 years commercial experince and I can't see doing this for the rest of my life. Is there anyone that has started at the bottom and opened up his own buisness, or anyone that works as like a project manager or super for a major housing developer or anything a long those lines that can give me advice. I love teaching what I know and working with people.

I worked in construction for many years, in contracts. You might be able to go into project management. Most of our managers and supers started out in the field then worked their way up we found that they actually understood the concept of "on time and on budget" better than the guy that had his college degree but had never been out there trying to get his subs to show up on the job. Experience is priceless in construction. With four years of experience you are going to need to get a few more in before you will be able to go up the ladder. Show a lot of initiative on the job, look out for your companies assets and network, network network. Learn the names of the general contractors supers and project managers. Keep your ears open as to who is doing what work, where. Ask other subs about their companies. When the time comes, you might actually be surprised to find you are in demand.

I haven't done that. Ask your contacts that you have met in your other jobs. Seek advice from them. Try taking a course in teaching on the side.
