Think.
How do I get started as a Security Guard?
Asked by Think.
Correct me if I'm wrong (really) but I heard the pay is quite good for security guards at various locations, whether they be at retail, private, industrial, etc. The problem is that I don't know anyone, don't know any agencies, and don't know how to get started. I am exactly 18 and have a spotless criminal record and don't do any drugs so that shouldn't be a problem. Anyone have any ideas about getting started in security? Or any suggestions about a higher-paying profession?

The security industry is vast and is growing. There are many jobs, which pay different and have different requirements and are all bunched under the title of security. California pays about $8 to $10 per hour for beginner security guards. You can get a little more ($10 to $15 per hour) if you get your gun permit. Correctional jobs pay around 55k to 80k per year. Federal security pays in the 65k per year range. Tactical security (Nuclear, NASA, government, etc.) pays about 65k to 85k per year. And the best pay from what I know is private military services which start at around 120k per year.

According to the US Dept of Labor, the average salary of a security guard is $20,000-$25,000. Here's what employers are looking for: -Must usually be at least 18 years old, -Pass a background check, and -Complete classroom training in such subjects as property rights, emergency procedures, and detention of suspected criminals. -Drug testing often is required and may be random and ongoing. -Many jobs require a driver’s license -Many employers of unarmed guards do not have any specific educational requirements. -For armed guards, employers usually prefer individuals who are high school graduates or who hold an equivalent certification. Note: For positions as armed guards, employers often seek people who have had responsible experience in other occupations. Here's the US Dept of Labor's info about the job description, wages, and outlook: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos159.htm Correctional officers make a lot more: $33,600 on average and have many of the same requirements as there are for security guards. Here's the job description, training, wages/outlook info: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos156.htm Police officers make the most of the three but you usually have to be at least 20: Police and sheriff’s patrol officers had average annual earnings of $45,210: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos160.htm Good luck!
