Career Questions and Answers

My boyfriend and I are thinking about being over the road truck drivers.?
Asked by harleyquinn666_99
I was wondering if anyone with experiance could tell us what its like for a couple begining this career, any pros and cons, what to expect in the begining. We both have experiance driving trucks, I had my CDL permit just never took the test and he was a diesil mechanic in the Army so he also has had a little driving time. We think that this would be a good career since neither of us really have a family yet. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Okay now that everyone told you that you work long hours and it's hard work lets get to the real information. You and your boyfriend would want to be "company drivers". This would be the cheaper route for you and better since you are newbies in the field. My boyfriend and I drive team with our own truck. It's cost us tons. We are gonna switch to a company in a few months we are just looking for one we like. You would be doing great since you do not have family "kids" because you should look at being gone from home for a month at a time. Most companies give you one day in for each week you spend out on the road. If you need more information please contact me personally. My father drove from the 60's to 2001. My boyfriend has drove since the 80's. I am a newbie with less than a year. Good Luck

Long hours and very expensive if you are an independent driver. Especially with gas prices. A friend of mine is getting out of the business because he is going broke because of gas prices. On the other hand the wages for regular drivers aren't that great if you work for a trucking company.

Long, long, long and boring hours, but the money is damn good. Make sure that your seats in the truck have good back support because if not, you will mess up your back.

As an ex OTR driver, HELL NO! Back in the day it used to be a really good line of work. Now it is bad. What used to be damn good money is really bad. The USA dept. of transportation, and the various state agencies has made it damn near impossible to make it enjoyable anymore. It may be ok for you and your b/f seeing as you don't have a family, but consider this. The wear and tear on your health and body(it is IMPOSSIBLE to eat right and exercise and still make money. When your rig stops,so does your pay). That I can't put a price tag on, you only have one body and one life. If you guys are driving team, then cash will be ok,just ok. I would not, repeat, not buy a truck or lease a truck. The fluctuation in fuel and insurance premiums that increase year after year regardless of how safe you are,is just absolutely mind boggling. Companies that promise you the world NEVER deliver on those promises. They will treat you like mindless, zombie, robot, pieces of crap. I have found now that local companies pay just as much,(in my case allot more because of my expierence) and I am home every night, with an occasional layover. The stress level is also significantly lower running local. So my answer to you is hell no. Then again thats just what my expierence tells me.
