Anyone know how to get a babysitting job?
Asked by masharocks91
I have tried putting my name in the neighborhood newsletter, I got one offer, but I couldn't handle kids that little. I'm good with kids ages 3 and up but I don't know anybody in need of babysitting!

Best Answer:
Make flyers with tear off tabs that include your name and telephone number (also include the information about wanting to watch children 3 and up) and put them on the bulletin boards and doors of stores around your town. Be sure to ask the owners of each shop first.

I would only trust referrals from people that you know such as neighbors or family members. Perhaps your parents have some friends with kids or a coworker that they trust. One must be very careful and cautious these days.

You'll need experience. It's gonna be tough for a parent to trust someone with little or no experience with their most precious posession (their kids). To get experience, volunteer at a local professional daycare. They can always use the help, and free help is even better. You gain experience, and a REFERENCE! You can then offer your baby-sitting services (with permission from your local daycare) to their clients in the evening or weekends or summer/winter holidays that daycare is not open or available. You'll have already built a repore with the parents as a volunteer and a familiarity with the children you have been volunteering to help. Don't think of it as working for nothing, but rather getting a free education and free clients!

Getting child care positions increasingly requires some credentials showing that you have the capacity to handle emergency situations. In most areas the YMCA/YWCA or other youth organization provides some basic babysitting training that credentials you. You should take such a course and then make sure that your "marketing material" shows your credentials. Like any other small business you need to do some advertising. I don't know whether your in a small town or large urban area but your business will grow best from having well satisfied customers and your marketing campaign could be hurt if your turning down customers because you "can't handle kids" no matter because of age or personality. You might eventually be able to restrict your market but if I turn to you for help and you are not available I'm not going to tell my neighbor to turn to you. Back to marketing. There are many places where you could place advertising--laundromats, local church pastors/priests, employment agencies, grocery store advertising etc. As soon as you have a customer happy with your work ask them if you can use them as a referece for future prospects. You might even try something like a 10% discount on one sitting session for every referral that results in a sitting session. Building a business is a slow process so don't get discouraged.

You can post something at sittercity.com. This site connects babysitters and parents from around the country. You can create a profile that specifies everything: your age group preference, how far you're willing to travel, your availability, and your fee. You can also find out what the parents requirements are. (I have a two-year-old and I've visited that site before when I need a babysitter in a hurry.) I'm sure you'll find PLENTY of parents in need of babysitting through that site. Good luck!
