You could be in the position that your boss is in now. If you think about it, administrative assistants are the meat and bones to most executive positions. The top dog may feed you what you need to do but you make sure it gets done. Who would know how to do what your boss does better than you?

I think you can improve yourself by this ways such as: (1)search something that is connect to your skill in the internet and find good point to follow it, (2)you can ask your friend to help you cause I think maybe they know it well than you, (3)you try to work hard and ask your friend that work with you to help but if they don't help you, I think you can try to make them happy (eat or buy something for them) and than ask about the job that you don't know, (4)If you don't know clear about the job that your boss make you to do, you can ask him to know clearly and don't be afraid but if you afraid or shy I think it can make you get a mistake.
Finally I think if you can try to know yourself and your job clearly and you can become the good admin assistant.

A few suggestions for you:
1. Join a Professional Organization such as International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). This will help you to grow in the admin field, network with other admins, help you to keep up with the latest technology and offer you the chance to be involved with other professionals that are looking for career growth. (http://www.iaap-hq.org)
2. Obtain a Professional Certification such as Certified Professional Secretary or Certified Administrative Professional. Both certifications are offered through IAAP. (http://www.iaap-hq.org/cert/advantage.htm)
3. Become a Microsoft Office Specialist by obtaining their Professional Certification. This certification covers MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Access & MS Project. Software that is used daily in an admin job. (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/officespecialist/officespecialist.mspx)
4. Not sure what your grammar or business communication/letter writing skills are, but take a class at a college or community ed to enhance your skills in this area. This is most important and can set you aside from others in this position.
5. Network with other admins where you work or people you know in similar jobs and ask for their suggestions.
6. Most importantly, keep up with your skills and learn new ones.
Good Luck!

Work in the field of which you have your degree in. There is no money in administration.

If sales and marketing is where you want to be eventually, then you are in the right place. Gaining the level of experience you will get in doing the administrative job is vital to your success later. Most people higher up in the field have been where you are or at a similar entry level position. This is where I started my marketing career....as admin for several different companies. Each one built my experience and landed me where I am now. Without my administrative experiences, I wouldn't have the base knowledge to work on. If you want to be in IT, you need to find an IT job, even if entry level. Same concept.

Look at heading towards project administration, you can use your IT skills here and if you study project methodology with an accredited provider, the opportunities for you are endless.
Project based organisations are always screaming for good project administrators who have an IT background.

Look for another job or train for another one while you are at this one. I am an aa and I have to say that the $$$ is good and the demand is better. I have moved up the admistrative ladder to "executive assistant" and make 50k at a non profit - i could make more at a corporation, like 75-90k. It always is a good thing to be able to to your own work and not rely on an assisant for everything. When the IT market improves or you get lucky, you will get your dream job. Good luck!
