Paralegal?
Asked by jcgirl06
I'm currently a sophomore in college. This winter I will be applying for my school's Athletic Training program. If I don't get accepted, I want to pursue a career as a paralegal. My school does not have a paralegal program. (only pre-law) Would I be better off to major in something else and then get certified or should I transfer out and start over at a school that offers paralegal studies?

My school offers certificate and associate degrees in Paralegal. I've copied and pasted the programs' info here. I am sure there are other schools that offer similar programs in your area. I am doing my AA degree in Paralegal, when I finish and get a job, I will pursue a Bachelor's degree.
I hope this helps.
Our 2 year A.A.S. program is our regular program for students wishing to acquire a degree in paralegal studies.
Our A.A. degree is similar to the A.A.S. degree, but with additional classes that allow direct transfer to most 4-year universities.
Our 1 year Plus certificate is for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree and wish to acquire a paralegal certificate.

Becoming a Paralegal is tricky because in some cases employers do not require a degree. Most lawyers and/or offices that you would be employed by care more about if you can do the job rather then the education that backs you up. I would suggest not majoring in the paralegal field and as you have already mentioned...doing the paralegal certificate program. If you want to major in the legal admin field I would recommend Business Administration. That gives you a much wider variety then just becoming a paralegal. With a Business Administration degree you can do accounting, HR, etc, etc...that will get you a better paying job.
One way to do is attend the University Of Phoenix online. Its quick however expensive. Maybe its something to consider?
Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

Come to Montreal :) We have a Paralegal program at my school with a guaranteed internship. It's a 3-year programme (6 semesters) and is 4500$ a semester Canadian plus fees (75$) and insurance (578$). Much cheaper than Pheonix or US schools. Canada rocks :)
