My partner is already training to be a plumber off his own back, any ideas where to get a job as a trainee?
Asked by caroline17nov
He currently works on Terminal 5, Heathrow as a plumbing storeman with around 30 plumbers but the company wont take him on as a plumber because he didnt train with them, but when he applied to train with them he was too old!!! hes 26 now! we have written to all local plumbers and no replies back really, and tried all local firms, he has asked work again. there is no such thing as a union with a list of contractors on it, he works for one of the largest already as do i myself, but the work is mainly subcontracted out. any help would be super!!!!!!! thanks in advance, or anyone who has been succesful would be super. He isnt going to branch out and work self employed he needs experience and would rather work for a firm. He is at COLLEGE and has NVQ level 3 but is training to become an advanced Plumber. He cannot work for a company without these qualifications, nor can he work on private properties without this he even has a JIB card for working on large construction sites. but needs to get a break. thats what i need advice on not how to train as a plumber. thanks

Not an easy answer to this. I strongly disagree that he is to old and if that is the only reason his firm wont take him on he should appeal, it against the law to discriminate for age alone. Other than that I would advise him to look at the larger office buildings. It sounds like you near London, so there is plenty of scope. Most employers would be happy to take someone on who has had the initiative to train off his own back. He could look for maintenance work in Hotels, Colleges places like that. I live in Cambridge and work a lot at one of the Colleges and they will be looking for trainee plumbers very shortly. Good luck

try your local job centre. they should be able to help you with a list of firms in your area that take on apprentices. also try advertising in the local papers in the jobs wanted section. i wish him good luck
