How many hours should be worked to be classed as fulltime?

In the UK, why is there such a variance as to how many hours is classed as fulltime?

In the U.S., it is 40 hours, but that usually includes a lunch hour. 35 hours if you don't count lunch.

oh my gosh i wanna move to the uk. its 40 hours here in the US, and thats just to get by sometimes. 5 days a week must be nice.

might not help you much seeing as though your in the UK...but in illinois,usa its 32 hours...it may be considered full-time in every other state in the US as well.

It varies my friend is full time at 33.5 hours, whereas i have a 38 hour week. I know others who work a 40 hour week. It depends on what is written in your contract.

Sorry, don't have UK experience. In the US 40+ is standard Full Time BUT if it is a Union environment, it depends on the contract. I've seen anything from 32 and up as Full Time BY CONTRACT. Sorry I can't be more help!

full time hours would be usually be between 35-48 hours depending on the type of work you do. 35 hours may also give you 30 minutes lunch break which is unpaid. 48 hours posts may include security guards 4 x 12 hour shifts
