You should learn how to:
Make a bed with someone in it
How to give someone a bedbath
Proper lifting techniques and body mechanics so that you don't injure yourself
Positioning of patients
Give an enema
Take vital signs (BP, pulse, temp and respirations)
Feed patients
Ambulate patients
Empty a catheter bag and report intake and output
Empty a bedpan and assist patient with personal care like brushing his teeth, combing hair, etc.
Observation of a patient's symptoms and reporting them to your nurse.
Infection control techniques including handwashing and gloves, and isolation techniques
Medical abbreviations and terminology
Medical ethics and patients' rights.
You should also learn basic anatomy and physiology.
I'm sure I've left something out. Never let a nurse have you give her medications for her, check blood sugars or change a dressing unless you work in a specialized area and have proof in your employee record that you have been trained to do this.
Also learn the importance of caring and compassion. Take pride in what you do, and never stop learning. Learn to work as a member of a team--it makes working more fun and easier. Nursing assistants work harder than anyone else in the nursing profession and get paid the least, but the work can be very satisfying if you want to make a difference in the world. Good luck.
