Curious
What is a good reason for a need of a 4 year degree in shipping/receiving work?
Asked by Curious
I work in the receiving department for a very large orgnization. I have an Associate's degree in Business and would like to continue for a Bachelor's degree, but my employer won't pay for it unless I put together a sort of portfolio and something that explains my departments need for my having a 4 year degree. I work a lot with Procurement in the part of making sure goods are received appropriatly and therefore can be paid. I also work with accounting in regards to the receipt of goods. We have a group of about 100 people and I work in the main nerve of it all. The office I work in is like the brain of the whole operation. What are some good ways to express my need of a 4 year degree for my group? Especially, when my co-worker has just a 2 year degree also.

Maybe it's like sending you to school to become a doctor and you will be working the docks?? It's their money and they want to keep you there . If you want to further your education pay for it yourself and move on!

Tell them you are interested in Management. All companies can use Managers and a Business Degree is perfectly geared toward this occupation.

One reason for having education beyond your two year degree for your department if you continue in a business degree is that you would be more value able to your company and could be more promote able. Additional things you would learn would be how to apply math to inventory requirements, be able to determine turn over rates, keep people better supplied with information on lead times, develop plans for way to increase just in time delivery systems and faster turn overs to avoid problems such as damage, thief and obsoletes. You can also take additional courses in communications to make sure your instructions leave no room for interpretation. If you can show your employer that by allowing you to continue your education on their dime you would provide a better return on the money than if they kept it they will go for it.

I use to work in the logistics area -- processing dept instead of shipping/receiving. Most of the managers have a degree, but there are some that didn't need one. The company actually helped paid for her classes. Maybe say exactly how the degree is going to reflect/improve the company. If you're in the office, see what databases, computer stuff you could learn or focus on accounting/finance major & get your CPA. If your on the floor, see if you could take some projectmanagement courses. In that industry, there is no time to put someone toward a 4 degree. If you can get it, congrats. Good luck.
