I would view cashiering as just that - running the cash register. Where sales associate would be someone helping/assisting customers as needed.

Sales Associates do selling... they walk the floor of a store, talking with customers, helping them to purchase things. They might also work over the phone. Cashiering is someone who works the cash register, as well as other odds and ends types of things.

Depending on the store, as a sales associate, you might be eligible for a commission. This is nice, because it rewards you for doing your job well. You would also likely spend more time doing customer service, although you might also ring people up. Cashiering would more than likely involve 90% of your time running the register, at least. I would go for a sales associate position- it might not be great, but it sounds a little less monotonous!
