Please help!? What are the steps you need to become an electrician or a plumber?
Asked by fallguy2004
I have been working an office job for the last 14 yrs and am looking for a major career change. I am 34 yrs old with no prior experience in either field, but I think this is what I want to do. I know you need an apprenticeship, but what are the steps you need to get started in either field? Any help would be greatly appreciated

You would likely need to go to a trade school or community college and enroll in the vocational program you want to pursue. My recommendation would be pursue the electrician route, and focus on Industrial Technology. This happens to be an incredibly hot field right now, as manufacturing is technology driven and there is a definite shortage of people with the appropriate training (PLC's). Get the classroom training, then find a company to let you get some "hands on" experience and you should never have worry about job security. I am in the employment business, and this is an on-going need for us!

That's basically the trick. You DO need an apprenticeship, and basically the only way to get that is to peruse the Help Wanted ads, or other similiar sites and find a plumber willing to hire an apprentice.
