How much money do truck drivers make? Over-the-road drivers usually start out at $0.25 to $0.30 per mile, equivalent to roughly $750 per week, after training. Training pay varies from about $350 to $500 per week. First year over-the-road drivers typically make $35,000 to $40,000. Mileage pay increases with experience because drivers become more productive over time. Second year drivers often make more than $50,000. Some drivers choose to purchase a tractor and work as a contractor for a larger company or sometimes for themselves. These drivers are known as owner-operators. Owner-operators have the opportunity to earn much more than company drivers. As with operating any business, working as an owner operator involves greater responsibilities and risks. Drivers who work locally typically make anywhere from $20,000 to $35,000 in their first year. Local pay plans vary from a straight hourly wage to incentive-based systems.

My dad worked as a truck driver for as long as I can remember. Up until 3 years ago. He delivered to Italian restaurants in our area. He worked 5 days a week about 66 hrs a week and he brought home no more than $32,000. He always said he could make the big bucks if he drove a semi and took out of state trips, but he'd rather be home with us.
