You can be any age to be a mechanic. The real question is, how old do I have to be to be hired as a mechanic. Hmmm....that is a tough question because there are a lot of mom and pop shops out there. They may hire you at any age so long as they pay you on the down low. If they report your funds to the IRS then I would say that you would have to be a legal age of 16 to 18 as a minimum.
