There is a broad range of duties lumped under "medical secretary", and the extent to which you do any of them depends a great deal on where you work. In a doctor's office, some of the duties can be: Answering phones, making appointments for patients, filing current charts and making new ones, greeting patients (and all that goes with this -- getting insurance information and collecting co-pays, etc), coordination of surgery scheduling and lab tests, and typing correspondence and/or office notes for the physician staff. To do this job well you need to have good general office skills, be organized and able to multi-task, and enjoy interacting with people. In smaller offices the medical secretary may also do insurance billing and/or office bookkeeping, although these are usually separate positions. A medical secretary in a hospital setting can work either in outpatient clinics, in which case the duties are pretty much the same as above, or for administrative staff where there are no patient-related tasks and it's not much different from a secretarial position in any other field. If a medical secretary position is described mainly as transcription of dictated notes with few or no other office duties, then it is more properly a medical transcriptionist position. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and clinical pharmacology are necessary in proportion to the percentage of time one is transcribing; if it's all the time, training is almost essential. A typical day? I don't think there is one. But I can tell you that most days are very busy and some are frantically busy. Hope this helps!
