College in the fall seems to be ruining my chances of finding a full time job?
Asked by Desiree
I'm 20 years old and have worked in food service since age 16. I would like to pursue a job in retail but most of the stores I applied to said they are only looking for full time employees. One store in particular said they have an opening for a store manager but when they found out I'm attending college in the fall, they lost interest in hiring me. Should I lie and tell them I'm not going to college after all? My parents have the burden of paying my car and insurance payments right now but I would really like to take on responsibility for myself. I don't know what my class schedule will be like yet but it may be possible for me to work full time and go to school, so what should I tell the store? I really need this job, no one else in or around my small town is hiring.

I signed up and worked with temporary agencies throughout my college years. It allowed me to work at various companies and try out different industries. I would apply for stores and let them know you are looking for full time work. When time gets closer and you find out what your schedule will be then cross that bridge when you get to it.

College graduates make alot more money than high school grads. Make college your #1 priority. Jobs come and go. Get your education first.

have you gotten all your classes? you may need to go to school at night if your job is days. or vis versa. or have classes on weekends. thats tough to work a full time position unless it has flexible hours for your week. I would talk to the manager about what you could work out. but sometimes a part time job may be just as well. Oh depending on what state you are in. Full time positions may vary in hours from 30 - 40 in a week.

Alright...I lied once and I almost ruined the chances of landing a job with a store I really like, but as the others said, education is first......but let me tell you a story my sister once did while in high school-college transition.
"I told them that I wasn't going to college, and when I was hired on the first day, my friend came in the store and started going psycho about college and screaming about how fun it's gonig to be with each other in college....my manager was standing right there and she didn't do anything."
With that said...don't let my answer make a decision for you.
