is it a good or bad thing for an 18 yr old to work in a fast food restaurant?
Asked by wendi lou
so i'm 18...and i've been working at this fast food restaurant for a year now, and now they're trying to make me a shift leader and all this stuff. everyone criticizes me about it! they always either put down the pay or say i can do better or something. but the thing is, most of them don't even have a job! and i don't see what's so bad about my job, it's not like i'm gonna make a career out of it or anything, i mean i'm only 18. also, would that look good on a resume that i was a shift leader?

Wendi. You are only 18 years old. You have 1 year experience. And, they are making you a shift leader. What would make you think you are not on the right track?! Don't let anyone tell you this is not a significant accomplishment, even in the fast food business.
I know at age 18 what your peers think about you is tremendously important. But, try thinking about it in these terms: When you are 35, will you really care what some 18 year old kid thinks about your job, your hair, your clothes, your whatever? What another 18 year old thinks about you today may really matter to you. And, that is a reality you must deal with. But, don't lose perspective of what is really important in the longer run. I know you won't believe this, but adults have been around longer and they know what is important in the longer run. Adults have assessed your performance to date on your job and they have determined you are worthy of more trust and responsibility. Think of how many people work at your fast food place. Now think of how many shift leaders there are. That should give you some perspective of your real standing relative to your peers.
One more thing. Do not discount the fast food business as a career. My brother-in-law started working for KFC while he was in high school. He never finished high school. (Don't you do that!) He worked his way up the organization from helper, to cook, to shift leader, to assistant manager, to manager, to regional manager... Today, he OWNS 20 KFC stores. He build a $1,000,000 4 story house on a lake with a pool. He made his life great by working hard. You can to despite what other 18 year old kids are telling you.
Good luck!

Be proud you have an income and don't worry about what other people think of your job. I'm impressed that you have stayed with it for a year, so yes, sticking with the job and getting promotions of any kind will look good on a resume. Good luck!

There is nothing wrong working at a fast food restaurant. You can learn about the food service business & gain leadership experience. At the same time, you need to explore what you want your future career to be. If fast food isn't it, you should put your efforts into what is. Also, don't let this temporary work get into your education. With proper education, you can do more things with your life. The education can be fashion designs, or culinary arts, or architectual, or sciences... wherever your interest lies. It is an investment for the long run. After all, it is a fact that people with college education generally make more money than those who don't.

It doesn't matter how old are you. If its a honest way to survive then whatever it is you want to do just carry on. No shame and fear in legal and honest activities. Keep a spirit inside you. Those who are criticizing you are feeling shame to see your achivement. So, its better if you don't care of them. Just keep listening. Don't react like immature. After a time they will feel bore to criticize you. As you are not responding them so how long its possible for them to continue?!
Hope i can make you understand. Best of luck!

Girl of course that is not a bad job, allot of times that is the best way for fast and easy advancement. And do not listen to other people, especially if they don't even have a job, people always try to bring others down and are jealous of what they have. Do what makes you happy. Next time someone makes fun of you say "are you gonna help me pay my bills and buy me stuff?" and the answer is "H*LL NO!" I think it is good that you are starting early, if you stay there in a year or two you probably will be running that place, which will lead to working in the head offices at corporate!! Being a shift leader is very good, it means they trust you and think you are doing a great job, which will defiantly look good on a resume! And remember there are older people working in fast food, and older people doing a lot worse things than you, be proud of your advancement, cuz others will not.

Always aim to be the best no matter what job you have. If you are happy who cares. The most important thing in a job is happiness.
