Mechanical Engineer & Defense System Design - Secret Clearance Required?
Asked by D
For all you mechanical engineers out there that may know - is security clearance from the DOD required in order to design defense systems and possibly weapon systems as well? Or, are you able to design these systems, manufacture, test them, and try to sell them to the DOD? An example company would be Milkor USA - they sold 9000 grenade launchers to the USMC, but do not appear to be contracted with the DOD.

Yes, a security clearance will almost certinly be required, depending on the exact nature of the systems you're working with. If you're designing truck tires, you're probably okay, but anything at a reasonable degree of complexity will be classified. You're not likely to be hired by a defense contractor in a technical capacity unless you are eligible to hold a security clearance.

DoD is department of defense. and closer to the president's system of preference. you cannot 'sell' anything to the DoD. study VERY hard, if that is your goal. do many presentations of your work. within yourself, be sure YOU are correct. you will be questioned and challenged. You will be taken apart. I say this, as I met that difficulty in my field (civil engineering) and I broke down. VERY hard.
