UK Graduate in need of career advise, please?
Asked by Henry_82
Hey everyone,
So, I've now graduate from Uni with a degree in Business Management. The thing is, I'm not too keen on working in some of the big firms, which means most of the graduate schemes available are out of the question. I'm more interested in working for small to medium sized businesses (less than 250 employees), as this will hopefully give me more of an opportunity to get an all round experience and have a real impact on the business, plus, large offices with too many people put me off.
In addition, I would like to work somewhere that isn't too formal, maybe even somewhere that doesn't require a suit all the time i.e. manufacturing, production, some retail professions, etc. I have about 5 years of part-time sales experience, though to be honest, I hate sales, especially telesales
Basically, I'm interested in any advise you can provide on suitable positions for a graduate with the above in mind, and how I may go about finding and applying for those positions.
I'm quite an introverted person. Maybe a career in planning, research, or even something technical, such as engineer, electrician or mechanic, but these require a different degree or to take an apprenticeship (too old to do). Any advice for changing direction from sales and management graduate to something more technical?

Honestly, you have to know sales. I recommend going to a used car lot and become a salesman. Not only do you learn a lot about negotiations and financing but you learn how to sell. You learn how to persuade people and you can make a fortune doing it.
I swear I knew a guy who routinely made more money as a car salesman than the lawyers and doctors in town.
From there branch off into what you want to do. Get yourself your own shingle is my advice. (that means get your own business in American slang)

You should work for a large company intially and obtain the experience. You will find it easy to move down to smaller firm once you have worked for the big boys for at least 5years. Its easy to come down but hard to go up.Also you will add clout to your CV/resume which will allow you do what you want in the future. If you want to go into retail, join the management scheme at Tesco's etc. This will give you overall experience.
All the best
