What is the best degree to have to get a good government job?
Asked by keithsfca84kg
I am not talking about politics. I am talking about government agencies. I guess I am also wondering if you know of any good government jobs. Is math the best degree to have? A type of engineering? Computer Science? Thanks for your input!

It depends on what kind of job you want, generally for GS-5 or GS-7 it only require you to have a 4 year degree in anything that relates to the job or 2-4 year experience. So if you are going for a Information Tech job you would probably need a 4 year degree in Comp Science and so on. However, there are internships that allow you to hold a wide variety of degrees. A great thing to do is market research at www.usajobs.gov.

I think www.usajobs.gov has the government jobs listed as well as the qualifications needed. You can surf their site and see what degrees are needed for particular jobs. They will give you a free subscription and send you job postings in the area you are interested in.

That depends on the exact field and position. If you are wanting to work for the Dept. of Conservation, a related degree is often necessary. If you want to work in city planning, you'll need an engineering degree. If you want to work in administration, public administration or law are good degrees to have. I have found that jobs often want field specific qualifications - if you want to work in Conservation, even in the administration, they will want a conservation related degree (parks and rec, agriculture, forestry, etc.) at the higher levels in addition to management experience or training (like a master's in public administration).
