Career Questions and Answers
What are the benefits of a career in art?
Asked by Questor
I've heard sooooo much negativity lately about art careers. I've heard that the jobs are scare, and money is poor. I love to draw and write, but I'm so unsure now if this is right for me. I'd like to have a job that pays a decent salary and that I can definitely depend on. I don't want to regret going to college for the wrong thing. Yes, I love art, but I have to make a living, and I want to make sure this is the right move. Any advice?

There is no guarantee for money if you want to be an artist. There are lots of other artists out there. The ones who make money aren't necessarily more talented than others, they just are good at marketing their work. If you want to major in art, you can teach if you get a master's degree. Or you could get into the museology field to be a curator if that interests you.
I am an artist, but I work full time as a paralegal. It pays the bills, and I am able to have a flexible schedule at work to work on art for a gallery exhibit, or do commission work. I feel rewarded, and I am not worrying about making ends meet. Plus, I have excellent benefits, which I wouldn't have if I were a full-time working artist.

The trick is to apply what you know to corporate world and get them to pay you for workshops that you hold for their employess, leaders, executives - so take some business courses and show understanding of business and the value of art and practicing one's line, creativity, getting sharp, etc...Betty Edwards approaches drawing this way, it's a good example to follow.
