My mother is a city school bus driver in NY. She's been doing this for 10 years. She works for a transit company that has a contract with the Board of Education. The pro's are you work during the school months and during the long holiday breaks you can collect unemployment as well as collect during the summer. The con's are driving during inclement weather, being issued a bus that is not working correctly (bad brakes, heating/air conditioner, axil just to name a few that my mom experienced.) She also developed asthma from the fumes of being in the bus for long periods of time and at the depot. Another con is the run. If you are on the bottom of the food chain you get the worst runs. It isn't after being employed for a number of years when you gain seniority that you are able to pick the better runs (for example in the last year my mother's run is just one child but she travels from NY to NJ.) The perk is it's only one child. A possible perk and I debate this issue with my mother is she would be unionized. Much more difficult to terminate a union employee.

Only pro's I can think of are the hours..
Cons - Driving a bus filled with crazed teenagers, dealing with smart mouthed punks, and fights.. yippie!

never tell a kid that you are going to do something to them if they don't straighen up and then don't do it, all the other kids will lose respect for you.Never tell a kid you are going to do something that you know you can't do.(tell a kid if they don't set down you will stop the bus and put them off, first of all you can't put a child off a bus except at school or at their house, the kids will find this out and they will know you are a liar and they won't trust you anymore. Never call a kid down to hard in front of all the other kids on the bus it will embarrass him and he will feel the need to act worse to impress the other kids so he won't feel so be littled it is best to talk to him after all the other kids get off the bus one on one and tell him that he is a better kid than that and you are proud of him that he will not be causing any more trouble on the bus.The worst thing a male driver can see on the bus is girls fighting, there is no way a male bus driver can separate 2 girls fighting,he can't touch either girl and so he can't stop the fight except talk them out of fighting ,usually that don't help a bit, he has to wait till they stop fighting or someother girls help stop the fight. Good Luck.....I Love Kids and never had much trouble with them when I drove the School Bus.....You will get to know everyone of the kids on the bus....they expect candy everytime they have a holiday at school, It's fun you'll love it!
