How do I go about persuing Photography as a career?
Asked by charlotte
Im only 15 but i love photography and i really would like to make it a career someday...and be really famous for my work but i have no clue where to start or how to get started! Well, taking pictures is the first step haha but what after that? Who do I show my work to? I have a pretty good camera but it's digital so i have some work there to get a REAL photographers camera. Any suggestions of how to get started would be great!!

Join your local 4-H club. You should be able to do some photography stuff there. Show your work at your local County/State Fair. Win awards. Take LOTS of pictures, and submit your best pictures to your local paper -- let them know that you don't want money, you just want published. Also, in High School, see if you can take photography classes or join the group that makes the Yearbook or Newsletters. And don't worry about the digital camera. A good digital is as good as a "real" camera -- you will eventually upgrade. Remember that Photography is about more than the picture, it is about the cropping. First put money into a good program to allow you to crop your pictures. You may want to offer to take "Senior Pictures" for some of your friends this summer. They can see if they like them and pay a LOT less (only for the development) for good quality pictures. Good Luck!

If you know anyone who has a current Mac, you can use IWeb to create a website showing your recent photographs. Set up an .mac account [$99 per year] and publish your IWeb webpage(s). Acquire from Vistaprint.com a colorful business card by selecting from their many templates a suitable one that meets your needs. Make sure to list the URL of your website along with a telephone answering device. Do not place your home address or anything personal such as a cellphone on this businesscard. Then when you receive the finished business card, pass it around to various churches, temples and the like to solicit business. When you receive a major photography assignment, visit your local professional camera store and "rent" the necessary camera equipment to fulfill this assignment. Instead of renting a studio, take people pictures at local parks and beaches and for indoor shots, go to the client's residence or office to set up a photo shooting environment which consists of a set of lights, reflective screens, background drapery, etc. Good luck!
