There is a payroll position open at my job. I really want to go into HR. What should I do?
Asked by hope9300
The issues are that I have to stay in this position for at least 2 years. I am going back for my MBA in the fall. I really want to go into HR, but more working more with people, not project planning. My HR has told me that the Payroll job will not put me any closer to HR, but from the way I look at it, it will. I will deal one on one with HR's in different businesses, we will have some project experience with implementing things such as time and attendance, and obviously get active payroll experience. This will also present me with an opportunity to do something different. I am completely bored at my job now!. I would leave the company, but they will pay 100% for my MBA. My HR has tried to convince me not to take the job ad just wait, but this job represents an opportuity for me to 1. Get a decent raise, 2. Get some other experience while getting my MBA, 3. Do something different from what I have been doing over the past 2 years. Can someone give me some decent advice?
The positions are within the same company. So no matter what I do I will still be able to get my MBA and they will pay for it. It is a weekend MBA program. Currently I work in Retirement Services. The job I do now, a high schooler could do. I basically put together retirement packages, mail them out and take phone calls.

2 years isn't as far as it seems.
Is it a better job than what you have now?
Are there a lot of people who want an HR job?
Is there any opening in HR?
Ask those questions.
I say take the job. If you have to deal with people and their pay, you can deal with people and their jobs.

Lets face it. It is who you know most of the time when climing the corp. latter. I say go for it. Finish going to school and make plenty of friends in the right places and you will get your job. Yes education is important but so is friends in high places. Good luck!!!

personally i would stay and get the free MBA you can get the other job get a raise but then have to pay for your own MBA or get loans and pay them back then the raise is not worth it. Stick it out and realize that your job is a means to an end.

You didn't state what you are doing now, so it's hard to judge whether you should change positions. I would definitely stay with the company if they are going to pay 100% for your MBA (I was $15,000 in debt after obtaining my MBA). If you are really unhappy in your current position, then a change is probably okay. But moving into payroll won't make you any more qualified to work in Human Resources. Yes, you'll interact more with HR, but that's about it.

There are colleges that offer Continuing Education classes.
Such as : Clayton State College and University, here in Atlanta where I live. Some classes you have to go to the school to take, some you can take online. Look around at the colleges in your area. These classes are not for college credit, but you will get a certificate after class is over...and it will look positive on your resume' when you get ready to move up in your company. It shows that you are encouraging advancement.

I would stay put in your present position. While studying for your MBA, would't it be less stressful if you were already doing something you were familiar with at work? You've been doing your job for 2yrs and you're bored. I hope that you do it so well that you have a right to be bored. I find that people who are bored, aren't doing everything they can to get their job done well. My advice would be to do your job the best you can and study for your MBA. Once you've accomplished that, you can challenge yourself at the workplace.
