Are you close to your work mates? Or do you all just get along because you work together? How do you relate?
Asked by af
I worked at a job where we were all close, hung out together outside of work once in a while and all. I start a new job tomorrow and I'm not sure what kind of relationships to expect. I know being close is the exception. How do most work mates relate?

I met my best friend at a job. The people I work with now are friendly with each other but most don't hang out with each other much more than on occasion. I have to say I kind of like it that way. I spend 8 to 10 hours a day with these people five and sometimes six days a week. I really don't want to see them on weekends and evenings also. That's my time to hang with family and my friends.

I've been in my position for about 7 months and in this time, my coworkers and I have hung out a few times. In fact, 4 of us are going to a concert next weekend.
We always invite each other to weekend events, but I think we try to keep a healthy distance between work and home. But, I do believe we genuinely care for each other, so that is nice.

I'm not that close to my work mates...it's hard, because I'm 14, and most of them are 20+ (and most are guys).
I'm not completely estranged, though. While we are working we talk and joke around, and last Saturday at work we play video games for a few minutes while on break.

It's always been different for me at every job. The best friend of my life came from a place we both worked at but in different departments. I have had work situations where everyone seemed to love me and want to be my friend and others where I seemed to be treated as some outsider that had to prove themself. I think the ideal is to try and get along with everyone and if you make a close friend or two, so much the better. I had this one particularily nasty boss rag me out about everything, just because she was a bitch to begin with, and added on that my co-workers were not my friends. I felt like saying, "But they are!" I guess it depends on the workplace.

Back when I was working at my last job, there was 23 employees, and only one or two of them were close. It was a case of only knowing them at work, and then we went our own separate ways, when the work day was over.
