Almost all big corporations need people like you. Do you mean event planning for intercompany or for product promotion? That information is quite important.

I got my degree in journalism in the pr sequence and some of my fellow students were planning on being event planners. However, since you already have a BA, I would think that's enough. You can prepare for a career in event planning while you're in your present awful job by volunteering to help promote, plan or work on events in any way, even if you're just sitting at a booth to get people to sign up. Since you've worked for a non-profit you know that lots of groups desperately need people to help with events but they don't have the funds to pay. Fundraising events are especially good ones to start with but I'd get as much experience as possible doing/helping with a variety of events. Always take photos of every event you help with so you can prepare a portfolio to show prospective employers. Network, network, network. Go to events. Try to meet the planner and organizers. Yeah, this is all on top of working a regular job but it's less time than getting another degree. As you're getting to know organizations and businesses and the public relations side, you'll hear about job openings. Do an outstanding job on every event you work on and your reputation will become known. For starters you could check with your local chamber of commerce and see what events they have coming up. They'll probably be looking for volunteers.
