How should I turn in my application at a retail store?
Asked by mike c
Okay, so I got the application to the following stores:
EB Games (video game store)
American Eagle (clothing)
Gamestop (video game store)
Pac Sun (clothing)
Barnes and Noble (book store)
Basically I'm just applying for positions such as cashier, customer service person, you know those store positions.
So when I go to turn in my application, who should I give it to? The store manager, or the person that gave me the application?
Also how should I dress while giving the application, decent, casual, etc?
Thanks!

I work as a security officer at a state funded employment agency in Texas. You'd be amazed at how lax people are nowadays when looking for work. They dress as if they were going to the beach with shorts,sandals,flip-flops, and the piece de resistence, wearing the ball cap indoors with sunglasses perched on the brim.
It may kill you for a couple of hours, but wear a long sleeve shirt AND a tie.
Wear slacks NOT jeans.
Wear shoes(shined ) NOT sneakers.
Cover up those tattoos and shave.
Know what a toothbrush is and use it.Nothing kills an interview than bad breath.
Bring a pen and at least two sharpened pencils.
Write down all your references and addresses of all your past jobs, phone numbers, zip codes the day before you go filling out applications.
You always ask for the manager on duty and you may not beleive it,but he/she is looking at your appearance from head to toe.
It's very rare, but sometimes your future boss will have extra time on their hands and decide to interview you right there and then.

Ask to see the manager. Dress decent just in case you get an impromptu interview. Be outgoing, pleasant, positive, and I think you'll find a job in a snap!

I work at a retail store and when people bring the applications in they give them to customer service. The person at customer service is a supervisor and depending how well your apperance is when you hand it in they put in a folder that they never look at or they put it in the folder of the ones they are consdering. So i would dress nice maybe not best dress but have a nice apperance and give to a supervisor.

You should go dressed nicely but casually. Slacks and a polo shirt or short sleeved button down. Wear decent looking shoes and make sure you look & smell good.
Go in, ask for the manager. If he/she is available, had him/her the application and ask if there are any positions available. If there are, ask when they're planning to do the interviews & if they'd schedule an appointment for you to be considered. If they're not, ask if they'd mind if you called back in a week or two to check in again. If they don't mind, call back and check the status of any openings. They'll see that you're a serious job seeker and have good follow up skills.

its always best to ask to speak to the manager to turn in your application. first impressions are important. I am a manger and when someone has taken the time to dress nice i am more inclined to take the time with them even if i do not have any positions open. smile a lot and good luck
