About contacting a human resource person at the place that I work at?
Asked by sb0983
I have been thinking about contacting a human resource person at the place that I work at about a job that I would be intrested in applying for. If I where to contact a human resource person at the place that I work at will they call my boss and tell them that I am prusing other jobs? Is it better to email human resources or to call them? Can my boss hold me back from getting another job since right now we are short on help?

First, talk to your boss about your plans to make a lateral transfer. You owe him that courtesy. If he supports it you have no problem. Go through the motions of making one. If he does not approve of it and you still want that transfer then you can file your request through HR. Peace and blessings!

yes, they talk to each other, and will tell your boss. legally he can't hold you back, but still might. One good way is to go in person and get a read from the person you are talking to.

First, what is your companies policy on internal job placement ? It should be covered in an employee handbook, if you got one. Second, I would talk to the supervisor of the department you are wanting to go to and inquire about the position but ask if the inquiry can be confidential. Then, if you must go to the HR director, do it in person. Again ask for confidentiality up to the point when your deparment manager must know. Lastly, since your area is shorthanded, it's likely the HR director will not help much and yes your boss can stop your move.
