What should I say to a potential employer about leaving a full-time job for a part-time one?
Asked by Jo
I recently left my full-tme job of two years because I could not stand my boss any longer. My husband can support us both financially, although things would be tight. Therefore, I am looking for part-time work at least to cover my personal expenses. How do I explain in an interview why I left my old job and am now looking for a part-time one?

Would you feel comfortable saying that you asked your last employer if you could shorten your workweek and work part-time and they said it was not an option so you left to look for a part-time opportunity? If you said you wanted to have more time to take care of household obligations, but still wanted to work because you enjoy doing what you do, I think that might work in your favor.
Saying you quit because you disliked your old boss could give a potential employer the idea that you might be difficult to get along with and/or have a problem with authority figures. I'd leave that part out.

Tell interviewer that you need a change, you were not happy with ou last job and are looking for an employer that will treat you with the respect that you deserve.. Be honest.. if you say something that makes no since, they will be able to tell.

I would just say that you did not like your boss for whatever reason.

You can always tell them the truth or simply that you would like to spend more time enjoying life and that a part-time job will allow you to do that while not completely leaving the working world.

You want to be able to spend more time with your family, so you want to work PT rather than FT.
