I want to become a journalist/writer, but where do I start?
Asked by ♥ e d e n ♥
I'm 14 years old and I really want to become a journalist/writer. Do I need to start writing some things that I can submit with my resume when I'm older? And if so, what do I write about?

Do you want to be a journalist or do you want to be a writer? They are not necessarily the same thing. For journalist, you should look towards taking journalism classes in the future and working very hard on grammar and style. For a writer - you need to write and submit to places that you think match your writing style and subject. What would you rather write about? Decide that first. Do you want to write fiction or non-fiction? Where do you intend to go with writing? Newspaper? Television? Movies? Books? All of these have different requirements. Look into what you'd need to do to succeed at your choice. I would suggest books from the library or bookstore about writing. Good luck!

If you have a local newspaper, ask to meet with the editor. Volunteer to cover local events, such as school activities that they don't have the staff to cover. I know at the small newspaper I worked at years ago, we were happy to get all the help we could. But don't expect to get rich. I gave up on journalism at age 28, returned to school, and eventually got a job that paid much better.
