Do waiter/waitress have to split their tips to other parties like bus boy, bartender?
Asked by pwhisked
Is it true that waiters and waitress must split tips to bartender or buss boys? This is in California and please post articles so I could read it.

Yes, generally, you tip the bartender 10% of your tips. So if you make $40 in tips, you give them $4. Not too bad, and it pays to keep them on your good side, so always thank them when you give it to them, and round up to the nearest dollar. We usually just passed a basket around to give the bus boys a couple bucks each.

I can't give you any articles, but I can give you my experience with this topic. I waited on tables for many years, and every place I worked required 15% of tips earned each day to go into a pool that was divided among all bartenders. Most good servers do not complain at all about this because a good bartender helps your tip percentage. I would "tip" the busboys out of pocket, just to make sure my tables were cleaned promptly. As good servers in a quality resturaunt rarely make less than $25.00/hr, and often make twice that much, this is a small price to pay.

It depends on the restraunt. many places don't force tipping, but if you tip someone your gonna get better service, so you can give better service and make more money.
