Career Questions and Answers
Is it more effective to apply for jobs online or actually speak to recruiters directly at employment offices?
Asked by thejazzyman
The sheer volume of applicants applying for the same vacancies online is totally discouraging. I was just wondering whether or not it might improve my chances by actually visiting recruitment officers face to face as opposed to applying for positions online.

Your best bet is to contact employers directly. First, browse websites like monster or your local job-finding website (in our city, for example, it's called "jobing.com"). Find the jobs you want, and they will almost always include the company name. Then, go to that company's website directly. Apply not only online (through their website or through the job finding website), but also send a hard copy of your resume in the mail directly to the employer address ("Madam or Sir" is fine on the cover letter if you don't have a person's name). You could go to a recruitment officer, but here is the scoop on recruitment officers: they will either charge you money up front, or they will receive payment from the employer and pay you - taking a hefty percentage out for their own expenses. If you go to a recruiter, you will make less money than you would have if you went straight to the company itself. Believe in yourself, check out example resumes and cover letters online, have anyone (friends, family, whoever) look over your resume or cover letter for obvious mistakes, and go for it. Good luck!

You could try that , but I think most will want you to have an appointment.

Visit some recruiters. They may have a better in. Otherwise, network as best you can. If you must apply online, contact the company (without giving your name) and ask them who is recruiting for said position, and include their name in your cover letter.

If its advertised online they usually want the applications on line as that is their preferred method. Having said that, theres nthing wrong with using your initiative and if you can find the phone number of the actual company themselves (usually its an agency advertising on their behalf) and ask to speak to their HR dept it will show some initiative. Going into employment agencies to register is good as well as then they contact you if they match up any jobs with your experience. Happy hunting!

when i was looking for a job i went in to the (whats it called ?one stop career center) anyway they got on the SAME internet site that i was able to get at home. they are not like they use to be where you would go in talk to someone and they would send you on an interview.
check all the local papers and penny savers. and go into local business by your home and ask if they are accepting applications for what ever position you want to apply for. word of mouth is another way...
good luck

First Apply on-line, most places in todays business world use online databases to track new positions and applicants.
Once you have completed the on-line application process wait 24hrs, then call the recruitment agencies. Let them you are just following up on your application to ensure that they recieved it. At this time you can also offer to come in, in person to discuss your education and qualifications with them. so that they have a better understanding.
Visit a few different recruitment agencies. Just ensure that you target ones that are recruiting in the location you want work and in the field you are seeking work in.
Once you have made contact with a recruiter, Keep their name, company name, phone number and a bit of information about the company and what it does next to your phone so when they do call you know who they are by name.

id make sure your cv is extra good make it stand out then apply on line and if you dont here back then give the office a call to chase up you applcation. this will show your willing.
but if you have a good cv you will always get a call back dont be put off by volume you might be exactly what they are looking for??

Applying for jobs online works very well if you have the qualifications and abilities they want and are able to tailor your cv and letter to reflect this. Then online recruiters contact YOU instead of the other way round, which gives you the psychological advantage. The sheer volume is not really here or there - 35 may have applied but the ones that will be contacted are those whose details most closely fit the brief.

The best luck I've had landing jobs is by actually delivering my resume to the potential employer in person. When you do this, be dressed and ready for an interview.
I've done this with employers twice so far, got the job both times.
Both employers said that the personal drop off shows my initiative (go getter) and that I'm serious about employment. ie..not contacting them just to fill up the unemployment insurance log book in order to qualify for the next payment.

i learnt the hard way not to pin my hopes with recruitment agencies, i wasted too much shoe leather being lied to for the promise of a job that didnt exist. 90 percent of them dont even have the decency to ring you back when you phone them. out of 10 agencies i got lucky with one and even they are pissing me about. commit your energy to sourcing out companies who hire direct without agencies.
