Career Questions and Answers

I am 27 yrs old and I work with insurance. I want to get a different career. I want to start a daycare.?
Asked by cocoa
I need some advice on how to start. Do I need to go to college for this. I know there is a lot of licensing involved. I would love to have my own business, preferably a daycare. I feel like time is going by and I still havent started a career I want. If I dont open a daycare, I would love to be a teacher. Any advice?

our daughter did this ... made this career move. [a while back, of course]. she already had a college degree when she started making the change [I forget what in ... some forgettable social science, I expect]. she started by getting a job in a child care [which was very easy -- short of staff even then]. then she went to a few classes and then became the Director of a Child Care. While there, she got an MA in education and teacher credential in her state. Then she applied for and got a job as a first grade teacher in her local school. She's now been a mainstay at the school for the past 15 years ... all in first grade!! Like most school districts, teachers are unionized and have both benefits and a pension plan. Child care workers and Director had neither. Imho, the only way to make reasonable money in a child care is to own it. That likely means you have to start it from nothing AND that means you have to solve the perennial issues of marketing to parents and keeping staffing filled AND making a profit -- very tough triple balancing act.
