I found that the Washington DC area has the highest firefighter salaries averaging 53K per year. The national average is 40k. Unfortunately, the link I provided does not have a breakdown for counties. It has it for cities and states.

You are going to have to say which nation you are talking about as we don't have a clue!

Overall, I would say the big cities / counties.. If you are in the USA (like someone else asked), LA County, New York (not long island) are good payers. Miami is not bad... Why? they can afford to, they are departments that run the large volume of calls PLUS have need for technical expertise, such as hazardous materials, confined space rescue, high / low angle, swiftwater, open water, dive rescues, EOD and bomb squad, swat assist etc.
Besides just looking at pay, look at benefits, location, and a big one, time worked.
Example, Charlotte South Carolina MIGHT make $40,000 a year after probation, Key West, Florida might make $50,000 a year after probation. in S.C. 40 is not bad at all. in Key west, 50 might get you a shared single bedroom or studio apartment if you dont have frills like electricity or water.
Also, if you work 40 hours a week for 40K, it MIGHT be better than working 72 hours a week for 45K.
Alaska is sometimes a big money maker because of no state income or sales tax, plus oil pipeline moneies, however cost of living is alot more expensive.
