Which of these 2 jobs is more repititious, backbreaking, and less mentaly challanging: car mechanic or welder?
Asked by Rita K
Do a car mechanic or a welder, generally speaing, have a more physically exhausting and boring job? I think the car mechanic's job is dirtier unless a few of you know otherwise.

Car Mechanic: Very greasy. Not repetitious at all, never the exact same thing twice. It can be a bit head scratching (mental challenge) at times when trying to figure out what is causing a certain problem. It can be physically demanding, especially when removing the engine and/or transmission.
I don't do this for a living, but as a hobby.
Welder: Can actually dirtier depending on what type of work (can't think of anything dirtier than an oil rig). Any repetition depends on what sort of welding you are doing. Same thing for the physical exhaustion. I do think the welder's job is far more dangerous considering they may be doing work in high places or even underwater. It also requires alot of practice in order to become good at it. Welding can also be applied to working on cars, especially body work. I wish I knew how to weld.

I dont think either of these job are boring. I do both as hobbies and enjoy them greatly. As far as backbreaking, id say it depends on the job, most welding is pretty easy, however, it can be VERY difficult to get the pieces in the position you want them in before welding. Working on cars can be quite hard at times, i.e., changing motors or transmissions. Both jobs can be quite rewarding to someone who enjoys the work, as they both provide instant gratification (you can see progress as it happens).

My boyfriend is a qualified mechanic and he loves it, cars are his hobby so he'd never find them boring.
I don't know anything about welding though, sorry!

Both are dirty jobs and both can be physically demanding. As far as mentally challenging The mechanic may edge this one as he must continue his education as model years change and advance in features.

a welder has to work with the heat from the torch in really hot weather - it may become more boring than a mechanic though it is a highly skilled trade the world over - as both are. a mechanic has a lot of areas to work in - all kinds of different jobs on a car from air conditioning to transmission - in this comparison the welder may have a more boring job overall
