what does a security guard do? is it easy to get this job?
Asked by Adriana
I'm thinking of doing PT security work, because other students at my university have said it's pretty easy and you get a of time to study, read, etc. Is it true that it's a pretty easy job? Do most companies require a guard card? Thanks for any advice or input you have.

How easy the job is depends on the actual assignment. You can have a job doing nothing or you can have a job where your really busy throughout your whole shift. Generally it is an easy job, but it can get fustrating because many assignments are very boring. Depending on your state, most states require any security guard to be licensed, so you do need a guard card. Your state might have exceptions on campus security. If they dont your school might offer to train you which will get your license. It all depends, just go ask whoever does the hiring at your school.

My husband worked as a security guard before, he said it's the most boring job in the world. You'll walk around the premises, make sure no one looks suspicious, tell all the skaters go away...etc. It's very easy, just walk around & keep your eyes open and if there's anything wrong, dial 911. It's not hard to find the job, but it's the security company picks a place for you to go, don't get the night jobs though, there's not much lights to study.

It's an easy job, the guard basically just sitting or walking around doing nothing. But when something really happened, then you life is the bet.

My brother used to work as a security guard. It's easy to get a job if you're willing to work the night shift, which he was. The problem is, he got bored out of his mind. He was posted at an office building where there was literally not another human being around, and there was absolutely nothing to do except try not to fall asleep - which is pretty much impossible. I suppose there would be assignments which are more interesting, but...
If you're on a day shift then likely there are other people around, and it won't look to good if all you're doing is your homework.

hey i'm a regional sup. with Security Engineers, Inc. and yes the work is painfully easy. it's true that depending on the state and the nature of the security work is what dictates whether you need a "guard card" or not. the company as well. my company requires certification, a pistol permit, clean driving record, military/law enforcement exp., blah blah blah. but there are many other companies who are not nearly as strict on their requirements. if you can get into it (and for a decent salary) i would recommend it. it's the perfect student job. feel free to contact me if you have any further questions at plutonicwoes@gmail.com
