How good do you have to be at chemistry to be a Pharmacist?
Asked by TJ
I have been trying to find a career I would like to do when I am older. So far, being an economist is my #1 choice. But as I was browsing USA Government of Careers, I clicked on Pharmacist just for the heck of it. I read about it and it seems like a cool job. But the description mentioned chemistry. I hate chemistry and I suck at it. So would a Pharmacist not be for me?

You do not have to like chemistry to get into pharm school. You must be able to get at least a B in it.
The requirements for pharm school are:
1 year of bio
1 year of general chemistry
1 year of organic chemistry
1 year of english
1 year of physics
1 semester of public speaking
other humanities depending on school
Pharmacy has a lot of advantages. These are:
1) Takes less time to finish compared to med school
2) If you plan everything correctly you can graduate pharm school when you are only 23 years old
3) Starting salary is 75-150k depending on location and need
4) You do not have to deal with blood
5) You will finish faster than your medical school student counterparts
6) You will always have a job, even if you;re 99 year old
7) Most jobs are 9-5 meaning that you will get to have a family life

CONS
1) Insurance - enough said
2) Dealing with patients (sometimes, the bad ones, suck)

Pharmacists don't have to do much chemistry on a day to day basis. They just have to get through the courses.
General freshman chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry are all quite different from each other. I didn't enjoy general chemistry very much but I didn't hate it. I reserved my hate for organic chemistry. On the other hand, I thought physical chemistry was difficult but interesting and enjoyable.
You may find that you don't really hate chemistry as much as you think.

You have to be quite good at it. Not specifically for the actual job, but to make it through school. To be a pharmacist now requires at least a Master's degree -- and I believe it actually requires a Ph.D. now.
The nice benefit of doing all that school work though is that you can easily make 6 figures straight out of school.

Pharmacist requires a Ph D. It involves chemistry, if you do not like Chemistry, you may want to think twice. If you enjoy economy, you may also like Finance or Accounting.
