Will my employment history as a truck driver matter when I start looking for a job as a software developer?
Asked by xmilestogo
*I am taking classes online.
Here is my history:
12/03-2/05 US Army
Deployed in Iraq
Heavy Equipment Operator
4/05-4/06 OWBF (a furniture place)
Local Box Truck Driver
8/06-12/06 Werner Enterprises
OTR Truck Driver
12/06-Present JB Hunt
OTR Truck Driver
I would really like to start working for a local company so that I can be home more often but I am concerned that when I finish my Bachelors degree next summer that no one will want to hire me because I have switched jobs too many times.
What do you think about this? Will moving to one final truck driving job make a difference in whether or not I can get hired as a software developer?

Does JB have some local or regional work in your area? I know that they have these types of positions
It is possible that your multiple jobs in such a short time will affect your hirability in the next phase of your life, but an explaination on your resume may help.
You almost have to put down your driving time on your applications because if you don't and they find out, which they will, then you will be falsifying...that is worse than job jumping.
I think in your cover letter, I would include that you were driving during those times while also working on your degree, driving was a stop gap measure...and kept finding ways to be able to be nearer home to work on it more thoroughly.
Try to turn the negative into a positive.
Good Luck!
