Could Inpatient Medical Record Coding be sent Offshore?
Asked by pugs f
I have been in the profession for a while, but with all of the talk about offshore outsourcing, Im wondering if I am immume? I currently work in a hospital with the 1199c (union) and I am wondering what is stopping my boss from coming to me one day and saying "Youre too expensive, I have a better solution." I know that IT professionals are still discovering that they are not safe. What are your thoughts about medical information being sent to Third World Countries?

I think HIPPA has a lot to say about confidential patient information being outsourced.

Anything to do with information and paperwork can be offshored. It's lousy but that's the long and short of it.

Medical information is already downloaded to India on a regular basis to be processed (their day is our nite) and back to the US the next business day . Hospitals doing it often try to insure the privacy of the records . But some places were outsourcing them to companies in Florida , who then did a secondary outsource overseas But without the privacy safeguards . People were getting blackmailed , send $$$ or we make your records public ! >
