What do you think of people who work in hotels?
Asked by jay_london
I have just left college and got a job working on reception in a hotel (in London). But whenever I tell people I work in a hotel, they look at me like I am scum or like they pity me. Why?? I would be interested to know how hotel workers are perceived.

I worked in 3 of the biggest hotels. Now I am a model and also working for an american company as Operations Manager. Big deal, it takes you places coz people want smart inter personal skills and nothing like hotel/hospitality exp on your resume that shows you fit the bill later on in life...
Make sure it is a big hotel.

They've probably heard that the hours are long/unusual and the money's not great.

Industrious and very underpaid but perform a very useful service!!! Be proud at least you are earning and paying tax and do it to your best ability. I appreciate you thank you. I am a security officer and porter at a school and we get looked at like dirt on the bottom of someones shoes!!

You must work in a very snobby hotel. Go work for a nice one and you shouldn't find people looking at you with pity.

I perceive them as hard workers. It's a good, honest job. I don't know why anybody would look down on you because of it. If they do, it's just because they are snobs.

At least you have a job, who gives two fu*ks what other people think. So long as you are happy with your situation.

Many people seem to look down on workers from the service industries because they're not regarded as "professionals" but rather as "servants" of some kind.
You hold your head up high, strive to do your job well, and be proud to be who you are. Take no notice of snobs, the people who look down on you do so out of their own insecurity complexes.
Good luck, and the day you stop enjoying London, your experience can take you to many other and even exotic places, while all the 'nose in the air' city types are stuck on crowded commuter trains, smelling one another's body odour, or in traffic jams, breathing carbon monoxide from the car in front's exhaust.

I think a receptionist is not as bad as being a cleaner in the hotel, and it depends on how good the hotel is really. But working in a reception is hardly any different than working in a resteraunt welcoming people in and giving them menus and telling them when their table will be ready, and people don't look at them people as scum, so why should they look at you as scum?

Basically I agree with Nick c. You've got a job, hopefully you are reasonably paid to do it and are you happy doing it. I think people working in hotels are 1st class. Not that I stay in many hotels, but the ones I have, (as well as guest houses, B&Bs) all the staff have been great. You are doing a worthwhile and beneficial job. Without you doing your bit anyone's stay in that hotel would not be a pleasant one.
