How difficult is a standard Civil Service test that is necessary for state employment and what is on it?
Asked by Elbie
I am applying for a state job as an addictions counselor and it is required that I take a Civil Service Test, particularly the "PET" Test. I am curious about what kind of questions it contains and its level of difficulty. Has anyone had to take one of these exams? If so, please let me know if you remember anything about it. I just want to make sure that I am prepared. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Federal Government has several tests they are structured to the job you are applying to. State governments also have tests designed for specific job descriptions. If you go to usps ( the Postal Service site) they have sample questions.

Most civil service test are for Federal employment. However, I just left state government and took a test when I first started my job. It consisted of words and definitions; lots of math questions such as fractions. Also word math questions such as two cars traveling down road at different speeds and when does one or the other reach destination????just an example. Depends on which test you take, it may describe situations in an office and ask you how you would handle it. The answers were mutliple choice.

The test are based on common sense, I recently took the COAST exam and it was pretty easy. The score based on how you did better than every one. Good Luck
