Career Questions and Answers
I want to be in Management and my manager and director have asked me why. Any advice?
Asked by bernie l
I've been an strong performing in my current position for a number of years and am looking to start on my MBA in fall on a part-time basis. I'm really interested in expanding my current skill set and feel that I can add value at the mgmt level. I want the experience because that's ultimately what I have an interest in doing with my life at work - work with people, motivate them, help them and further develop the structure and strategy of the company.
I'm not sure if my manager/director see me as adding more value to the company in my current role or if they just don't see me 'mr. management'. I can give the every day talk about why I want to be in mgmt but I want our discussion to have value and meaning. Additionally, I want to convey that I've felt I've done my part in my current role and am ready for more responsibility and a new career path. I have an underlying feeling that if I can't move into this position that I'll look to move organizations - something they are not aware of.

I think you expressed yourself beautifully. Absolutely pursue management aggressively. Stress the need to be actualized and challenged, and your firm confidence that you can and will be a positive member of management. There is nothing wrong with letting them know that management is not just a goal, but something you will achieve. That lets them know if they dont accomodate you, someone else will. BTW, ask them to pay for your MBA as well.
