Hi, Doe anyone know whether you can make a decent living from being a driving instructor ?

I need a career and i love driving and i thought that combining what a love to do and a job would be a good idea. I have two kids and ideally would like to be able to fit work in around them.

If you want to do it full time then there are many things to take into consideration. Your will need a good reliable car, as the mileage will be high. High mileage means high fuel, servicing and insurance costs. Most pupils can't get time off work so out of hours and weekends tend to by normal. The job itself can be very satisfying but you must have the right temperament or you will lose pupils. Write a list of what you would consider the possible outgoings, not counting your wages, and then how many hours at 18GBP per hour you need to work to cover the costs. Now decide your minimum wage (don't forget your tax and insurance) and work out how many more hours you need to work to cover that. You will find its far more then you imagined. Now try another way of looking at it. Stay at your normal job for now and start your driving instruction part time to see how it goes. You could also try a local school to see if they want an instructor.

I've seen loads of adverts in the papers, claiming the wage is about 30k a year. I'm not sure if the market is getting saturated though as there seems to be a lot more instructors nowadays.
Good Luck if you go for it..

Two of my friends have been driving instructors. They have both given it up. They said the money can be good, but the working hours were mainly evenings and weekends.
It obviously depends on how old your children are preschool age brilliant, not so good after that.
