I'm a librarian with Anne Arundel County in Maryland, so I'm happy to answer your question.
If you're interested in becoming a Maryland State Trooper (i.e. joining the state police), they have all kinds of information on the state website at http://recruiting.mdsp.org/
According to their site, the starting salary for a cadet (a trainee under age 21) is $22,871. No doubt that goes up significantly once you become a full-time member of the force. There is supposed to be a link to the salary scale for MD state police; unfortunately that link is not working. However, they have a link to contact them with any questions you have, so I'm sure they could give you that information in two seconds. They also have information on the site to help you decide if it's the kind of job you want.
Now if you want to work for one of the local police forces, those are mostly hired at the county level, and the starting salary is going to vary depending on the county. Washington County, for instance, sets an entry level salary of $37,030, while Anne Arundel County's entry level salary is $40,000. The counties will also vary in their job titles; in larger counties like Howard or Anne Arundel you might join the force as a "police officer." In smaller counties like Washington or Queen Anne's you might join the force as a "deputy sherriff." And salaries can go up quite a bit. In Anne Arundel County, the max salary for a "police officer" is $71,352, though it's very likely you'd be promoted to a higher rank before you ever got there, and a higher rank means an even higher salary ceiling. As a police captain in Anne Arundel County, for instance, the max salary is over $100,000.
I hope that helps you with your questions. Don't forget that if you need an answer and don't want to wait for the goodness of strangers, you can always contact your local library. We're happy to help you, and even if we're closed, many libraries now offer e-mail reference and 24/7 live reference chat over the internet, such as the Maryland AskUsNow service in our state.
Have a nice evening!
