As an Engineering Intern, what are some ways I can become involved in more important projects?

I have been employed as an intern in a mid sized company, working with 10 engineers. So far, I have been working on manuals, CAD drawings, and basically documentation of equipment awaiting release. What tips do you have that can help me become more involved with design projects particularly, or any kind of general tips? Thx. btw. this is a mechanical/electrical engineering position and I have finished my first year. I am working full time right now.

A good lesson in life: If you want something, ask. Ask the engineers what you can do to help. Get involved, do the best job you can and build your reputation. Don't be shy. If you don't understand something, ask questions. No one expects you to know anything, really. What they want is someone who is bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and asking for work. Be a sponge and learn. But ask.

From looking back over the work you have done for these people you should be able to find the one who is having the most trouble keeping up with the assigned work load. Ask him if there are any routine parts of his engineering design he can pass off to you. If the first ones come out good ask for more responsibility and more recognition. If you can be successful doing this and build a good track record ask your supervisor to consider you for small independent projects, maybe with that first engineer as your mentor.
