Career Questions and Answers
I want to apply for a job not related to what I have been doing for the last 9 years, need help?
Asked by tiredofBS
I worked for 9 years as a dental receptionist and dental assistant. I have alot of excellent customer service skills, and I love helping people. However, I also have a hobby of taking portraits and photography and Im really good at it, however I have never been employed by a photographer. I thought about making a portfolio with my work, but how would I go about making a resume that would make sense considering all my schooling and experience is in the dental field and the 2 arent really related except for the customer service aspect. Any ideas? Please?

A normal resume is chronological showing your career over time. Another type is function related and that shows your skills within different functions derived from different situation - education, job experience, volunteer work etc. etc.
You should try and list all your skills under each job or activity you have done. Then try and sort them into categories:
Customer service
Photo
IT software
Dental experience
Then in the end of the resume you give a short chronology of what you have done, but without additional coments.
Try look at homepages with resources for resume writing:

One thing get the portfolio done, and remember that in conservative jobs they will expect a conservative resume in creative jobs they will expect a creative resume.
Good luck.

On the top of your resume, you have to opportunity to put a goal and a summary section before you list your experience from newest to oldest. Use those sections to highlight your desire for the new postion. Honestly list your previous jobs, and your schooling.
It's tough to go into an entirely different industry like you are trying to do, but the more you try, the odds are someone will take a change on you eventually.
